Trade fair innovations 2017: Model Construction, Hobbies

from Ulrich Texter

Trade fair novelties for the Spielwarenmesse® 2017 in the Model Construction/ Hobbies category: a large selection of new model kits, radio-controlled (RC) models, multicopter and camera drones with 4K resolution and a lot more awaits you in Nuremberg at the world's largest toy fair. Here is a foretaste of some of the new products to be released in 2017.

Whether for commercial or private use, multicopters have been shaping the face of the model construction and hobbies sector for years. Sometimes it is a matter of a "game-multicopter" for every man, woman and child – and every purse; sometimes it is the semi- and fully professional photo-drones for model-making enthusiasts, as offered by DIJ and Yuneec in Hall 7A. The spectrum ranges from inexpensive mini-multicopters such as the "Froxxic" from Revell, which buzzes under the living room ceiling, to ready-to-fly versions of hexacopters. Traditional products such as classic aeroplanes, helicopters or boats round off the RC range.

Ever more power

The trend with regard to high-quality drones is towards 4K resolution, whose photo and video recordings are equal to those of a premium action cam. One example is provided by Yuneec's 4K selfie drone, Breeze, which allows you to capture not only impressive camera flights and spontaneous selfies in the form of videos and photos, but also share them straightaway in social networks (Hall 7A / F-171).

The newcomer XciteRC, founded four years ago, promises a global novelty with the Walkera mixed-reality drone AIBAO. It is the world's first mixed-reality drone that offers a mixture of reality and the virtual world. Thanks to the mobile phone app, you can play a virtual flight game in the real world (Hall 7A / D-112).

With its S6, Wingsland Technology GmbH wants to open up new target groups and start a new trend towards intelligent, pocket-sized drones. The application possibilities range from travel and leisure activities to family celebrations via outdoor and extreme sports. With a size of 138 mm x 79 mm x 32.6 mm when folded together and a weight of just 250 g including battery, the compact drone fits into any trouser pocket. Thanks to the 4K Ultra-HD camera, the S6 records everything in great detail, either as photos or videos. With the aid of the customised app, the drone can be controlled with a virtual joystick, gravity sensor and voice control (Hall 7A / F-182).

Downsized technology makes it all possible

"The trend towards quadcopters and multicopters is unbroken from our point of view, as the dream of flying is one that has always fascinated people," says Bastian Niethammer, Marketing Manager of Dickie-Tamiya Modellbau GmbH & Co. KG. "Thanks to today's sophisticated electronics for stabilizing the aircraft, as well as a so-called headless mode as offered by Carson in the successful entry-level RC Sport series with some X4 models, flying will become even easier and will give beginners a lot of fun and immediate sense of achievement."

With the new Easy Tyrann 235 Waterbeast 2.4G from Carson, no pond or pool will be safe any more, since the large floats on the helicopter's landing gear make spectacular starts and landings on water possible. Its unusual appearance makes the Waterbeast a real eye-catcher (Hall 7A / B-119)

Affordable entry-level models for the mass market are also to be found at Graupner GmbH. With their Vector Planes series, the Swabian company is trying to combine the best of two worlds. The models can also be used as hand-thrown gliders and can be upgraded to remote-controlled airplanes that are steered by a controller. In the premium product line, the company is launching the "Nordic" kit, a salvage tug that will appeal to the experienced model builder (Hall 7A / D-116).

With its Liebherr Excavator R 936, Jamara is issuing a heavy piece of equipment. "All the joints of the 50 cm long excavator can be individually controlled and the machine can be moved in all its functions using the 2.4 GHz radio remote control," says Sascha Niethammer, Head of Marketing Jamara (Hall 7A / B-129).

After five years of intensive development and testing, SIKU is also issuing an excavator: the SIKUCONTROL32 Liebherr R 980 SME. The caterpillar excavator combines what RC fans and excavator enthusiasts have long been waiting for: a 2.4 GHz RC model, which can excavate just like a professional (Hall 12.2 / P-02).

Lighttec GmbH offers customers a learning experience. With its quadcopter module and DS24 hexacopter module, it offers two models that have to be assembled from bricks, remote controls, motors and circuit boards (Hall 3A / B-39).
