Toy innovations 2018: Model Railways and Accessories

from Ulrich Texter

This year's new products include exclusive and insider models, matching products to create entire theme worlds, as well as detailed standalone pieces designed as highlights for model railway layouts. At the same time this classic toy is trying to attract the young market. Here is a little foretaste of the new products in the Model Railways and Accessories product group at the Spielwarenmesse® 2018.

Full steam ahead into the age of electro-mobility

Model railway enthusiasts will always find room for steam - provided it's the right engine. Once again this is one of the great challenges for suppliers of rolling stock in 2018. For the "progressive" fans, there are lots of diesel and electric engines.

Gebr. Märklin & Cie. GmbH, the market leader for rolling stock, offers a wide range of all these engines (Hall 4A / F-220, C-229). Märklin's H0 gauge Rheingold train set, also included in the Trix H0 range, is sure to be popular with the "nostalgics" since the seven-carriage Rheingold is pulled by the Class 18.5 express steam engine with a tender.

Another highlight is the "Crocodile" from the Swiss Federal Railways. This crocodile shunter is being produced as a one-time series for insider members. Both the Rheingold and the Crocodile are technically state-of-the-art in every respect, complete with a digital decoder mfx+ to make them run as realistically as possible.

Modelleisenbahn München GmbH, which owns the brands Roco and Gebr. Fleischmann, (Hall 4A / C-250) is also presenting a lot of new products. The highlight of their H0 gauge line is the Class 86 engine, a Deutsche Reichsbahn goods train tank engine. Fleischmann's gauge N range has entered the modern world with the Siemens Vectron.

New layouts created with one ear on the track

A few years ago, Piko Spielwaren GmbH (Hall 4A / C-228) entered the TT gauge market. Now the company is an established name in this segment and has a lifelike model of the classic Class 55 steam engine as a special bonus for the "conservatives". This model is impressively similar to the original. Lots of typical engine noises such as the sound of steam and whistling as well as other functions are also individually available with this model. For Piko, 2017 was all about repositioning itself. Its ranges have become more clearly differentiated; the Classic Line became Classic Nostalgia, and Expert Plus was added to the Expert Line. With the detailed model of the cult engine BR 118, the company has created another monument to the older section of German electric engines in H0 gauge.

Turn the playroom into Morrowland

Turn the playroom into Morrowland

Thanks to Momo and The Neverending Story he is one of the most successful children's book writers. Michael Ende created immortal characters such as Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver. And now Märklin has added their locomotive "Emma" to its Start up line so that playrooms can be turned into Morrowland. Emma has a detachable roof so that Jim and Luke can drive along on the footplate.

Think tanks for dioramas

There is no theme too far away, and no model so elaborate that it does not spark the imagination of manufacturers of model railway accessories. Suppliers of decorations and fabrics for dioramas have once again demonstrated that this is true.

Gebr. Faller GmbH (Hall 4A / F-230) have an example to prove that high quality exclusive or anniversary models do not encounter any sales problems and are highly sought after by collectors. The company has had lots of experience in the high-end sector over recent years, and now they are presenting the elaborate "Container Railport" building kit. It is aimed at experienced model builders and focusses on the railway. With a separate motorisation set, builders of model railways or dioramas can put life into this impressive model.

Accessories for building sites and rural idylls

Viessmann Modelltechnik GmbH (Hall 4A / C-232) and Noch GmbH & Co. KG (4A / C-211) also have "more life on the layout" on their agendas. Viessmann's e-motion range now includes a smith who forges the red-hot iron with his hammer. A sound module produces sounds to match the movement of the figure. Noch has announced a new theme for 2018 - "Joys of the Countryside". But there's a touch of Hitchcock in their range, too. Gauge H0 has a haunted house with light and micro-sound effects such as ghosts screaming. This laser-cut building kit is clearly the highlight of the year. And for horror film fans there is also a creepy graveyard.

Busch GmbH & Co. KG (Hall 4A / C-220) has stuck to traditional themes with a wide variety of items. The first theme of 2018 is a building site that has been realistically and accurately created in H0 gauge. The spectrum ranges from very delicate metal building site fences, extensive road repair kits with civil engineering equipment and even patches that can be added to make any road look old and worn. The action sets are a real highlight: they include a portable power generator, asphalt saw, tar kettle, vibrating rammer, vibrating plate, road roller, road marking machine and a construction saw. The ideal way of working off your stress after a journey on German motorways!
