Toy innovations 2018: Sports, Leisure, Outdoor

from Ulrich Texter

Always on the move! Even given the proliferation of smartphones, tablets and WiFi, the great outdoors has lost none of its appeal to children. Just the contrary, in fact. True adventure still involves getting out in the fresh air – whether to play sports, do a bit of gardening or simply dig around. Here is a small selection of the innovations awaiting trade visitors to the Spielwarenmesse® 2018 in the Sports, Leisure, Outdoor product group.

Grassroots movement

Moses Verlag GmbH: gardening in beds, pots and boxes
Moses Verlag GmbH: gardening in beds, pots and boxes

Gardens are the ideal place for children to experience nature. Fundamentally receptive to and enthusiastic about outdoor activities, they are not even put off by the thought of a spot of gardening work if this is presented to them in the right way. Good tools are all part of this. For years now, toy manufacturers have been offering spades, rakes, planter boxes and propagators, often licensed, that encourage children to learn about the natural world through play. Moses Verlag GmbH (Hall 10.0 / H-04a) has now brought out a how-to guide on gardening in beds, pots and boxes (German title: Gärtnern in Beet, Topf & Kasten), with tips for little gardeners. At the same time, the company is also offering the right tool for this in the form of a multifunctional folding spade made of carbon steel.

A universal tool for the garden, beach, sandbox and snow is available from Quut Toys (Hall 8 / D-31). Raki can be used as a rake or spade and also as a funnel and sieve – ideal for pottering around in the garden. It is compact, light, versatile and ergonomic.

The major future potential of the Explore Nature trend identified by the Spielwarenmesse TrendCommittee has not gone unnoticed by others. Digitisation is heralding a countertrend involving DIY and "getting back to our roots". Habermaass GmbH (Hall 3 / A-13, C-12) has been ploughing the wide field of nature for more than ten years with its Terra Kids line. Besides revamping the line to give it a completely new look, the company has also added more tools, a telescope, a blow pipe and a fire starter set.

Muscle-powered mobility

Besides the current trend in gardening for kids, child mobility remains a central theme in Nuremberg. Children’s vehicles from tractor expert Franz Schneider GmbH & Co. KG (Hall 7 / E-19, F-02) are known for their lasting value retention and sturdiness. The company is now venturing into uncharted territory with its Volvo Dumper. The Dumper established a new kind of vehicle fifty years ago and now represents an alternative in the company’s vehicle range.

The Snoop may no longer have the surprise factor in these times of crossovers and clones, but it still boasts an astonishing design. This 3-in-1 quick-change artist is a hybrid consisting of a trike with a rod, a balance bike and a scooter. The idea originated from the PM Investment Group Sp. zo.o. Sp.k. (Hall 2 / A-13, B-16).

Design it your way

Individualisation is undoubtedly a mega-trend. Accordingly, Coppenrath Verlag GmbH is encouraging further self-expression with its new "Pimp My Bike!" products for kids who want their bikes to stand out. "Cycling has never been cooler", says Jörg Ueffing, who heads up the Die Spiegelburg brand. "With striking and practical accessories, little racing cyclists can now revamp their bikes."

Micro Mobility Systems AG (Hall 7 / F-09), which is presenting the world’s first scooter assembly kit, is more focused on children getting hands-on during the building process and not just the styling. Hudora is making a move with its classic Big Wheel. Thanks to new RX Pro technology, the scooter offers more speed with increased comfort without compromising on safety.

Targeted summer activities

MTS Sportartikel Vertriebs GmbH (Hall 7 / E-02) is hoping to redefine throwing and catching with its SMAK-A-BALL. A circular catcher is used to catch the ball and hit it back. The SMAK-A-BALL set consists of a large beach ball and two catchers, and there are unlimited ways to play. Players are encouraged to try out creative tricks that leave their opponents stranded.

In the summertime when the weather is high – water fights are some of children’s best summer highlights. This explains the lasting success over many years of the Super Soaker range from Hasbro Deutschland GmbH (Hall 12.0 / F-10, H-05).With the Soakzooka, the company is now presenting an extra-long water blaster with a unique pull handle – for maximum soakage, of course.

Eolo Sport HK LTD has gone a step further with its hydro charger with patented pump-action technology, which allows "hydronauts" to attach the water tank to their upper arm and wear the spray jet on the back of their hand. On display in Hall 12.0 / F-10, H-05.
