New start date improves internationality of the International Toy Fair

The Toy Fair 2012

Altogether 77,500 buyers and retailers from all over the world poured into the 63rd Spielwarenmesse International Toy Fair Nürnberg (2011: 79,243). The share of international visitors increased to 55 per cent, which is also attributed to the new start date of the fair. This year's International Toy Fair started on Wednesday, a day earlier than previously. "By advancing the start of the fair, we are responding to the attendance habits of the visiting toy professionals from 119 countries and now offer them more consecutive working days," says Ernst Kick, Chief Executive Officer of Spielwarenmesse eG. More buyers came particularly from Russia, the USA and Great Britain. "The new date of the International Toy Fair is well-thought-out and has the desired effect," says Dirk Engehausen. The Chief Executive Officer of LEGO Central Europe confirms the increased number of international visitors at the current fair. Mark Hoijtink, General Manager Northern Europe Hasbro, takes a similar view: "We welcomed more international visitors on our stand from Wednesday onwards. The International Toy Fair is where we meet the world."

92 per cent of the 2,776 exhibitors have already said they will be there again at the International Toy Fair 2013, compared with 87 per cent for visitors planning to attend the fair again next year – as many as 41 per cent of them do not visit any other fair connected with the toy industry.

Mattel also thinks the importance of the fair is growing. "The Spielwarenmesse International Toy Fair is the toy industry's international fair, where we meet customers from the whole of Europe and from all over the world. I can't imagine any better place for presenting our new products than at the International Toy Fair," says Bryan Stockton, CEO at Mattel. Ulvi Aydin, Managing Director of Roco & Fleischmann also emphasizes the importance of the world’s biggest trade fair for toys. "The International Toy Fair is still our most important start to the year for disseminating our product and brand messages."

The 347 exhibitors (2011: 325) who presented their products for the first time at the International Toy Fair also secured this starting position.

Fair focuses on teenagers
The themes at the International Toy Fair 2012 received thoroughly good ratings from the visitors, including a particularly good response to the Toys4Teens action area. Here the visitors benefited from new ideas for stimulating the desire to play among the 13 to 17-year-olds. Presentations by experts at the Toy Business Forum also illustrated how retailers can approach teens in a more targeted way. The LicenseCenter, the meeting-place for toy and licensing professionals, also tackled issues concerning teenagers. Jay Visconti, Vice President Merchandise Licensing at Disney Consumer Products, stressed the collaboration between toys and licenses in Nuremberg: "The International Toy Fair is the most important moment in the year for the licensing industry. I believe the licensing and toy industry can now be regarded as one."

Mini Micro 3in1 wins ToyAward Traders’Favourite
With its Mini Micro 3in1 roller scooter that grows with the child, Micro Mobility Systems Ltd. convinced both the jury and the visitors at the International Toy Fair. The Swiss company won the ToyAward Traders'Favourite 2012, which means the Baby&Infant category won the main prize worth 20,000 euros. The PreSchool, SchoolKids and Teenager&Family categories also competed for the Traders'Favourite.

With these results, the Spielwarenmesse International Toy Fair Nürnberg has confirmed its role as leading source of ideas for toy professionals and has expanded its position as leading fair. Next year the industry meets in Nuremberg from Wednesday to Monday, 30.1–4.2.2013.
