From the USA to Japan: experts search for toy trends

  • Exhibition in the TrendGallery covering more than 1,000 m²
  • Presentations at the Spielwarenmesse Toy Business Forum

“Which trends will have the greatest potential impact on the toy market in 2017?” – the ten-member Spielwarenmesse TrendCommittee is currently searching all over the world in an effort to get to the root of this question. Spielwarenmesse eG will then present the trends for 2017 this October. Additionally, the most exciting trends and toy products will be exhibited for visitors to experience in the more than 1,000 m² TrendGallery special area at the leading trade fair in Nuremberg, to be held from 1 to 6 February 2017.

Experts on the hunt for trends
The industry professionals rely completely on their many years of experience in their search for key products and guidelines for the toy market. “You have to take a very close look at which social dynamics and technical developments are currently taking shape. We do not just pick out individual products. Instead, we observe many different innovations and look for patterns and commonalities which then establish a trend”, explained Axel Dammler, a market researcher with iconkids & youth international research GmbH. Marek Jankowski, founder of the Branza Dziecieca industry magazine in Poland, believes the Spielwarenmesse team especially benefits from the diversity of the market: “The sheer abundance of manufacturers and products means there are always innovative developments to be discovered, over and over again. Each year brings entirely individual trends with it - a good example being this year’s Design to Play trend, where the toy becomes an attractive object for your home.”

In addition to Axel Dammler (Germany) and Marek Jankowski (Poland), there are another eight experts on the team. They are active in all of the world’s major toy markets and are at the coalface of the budding trends.

The Spielwarenmesse TrendCommittee is made up as follows:
John Baulch (publisher, Toy World Magazine, UK)
Daniele Caroli (journalist, Giochi & Giocattoli, Italy)
Richa Dikshit (blogger, Toy Tasting, India)
Philippe Guinaudeau (market researcher, Kidz Global, France)
Marek Jankowski (journalist, Branza Dziecieca, Poland)
Gabriela Kaiser (trend consultant, TRENDagentur, Germany)
Reyne Rice (journalist and trend expert, USA)
Atsuko Tatsumi (publisher, Weekly Toy News, Ltd., Japan)
Dr. Maria Costa (market researcher, Toy Research Institute, Spain)
Axel Dammler (market researcher, iconkids & youth international research GmbH, Germany)

Knowledge forum offering expertise
In addition to the TrendGallery, trade visitors can also look forward to the Toy Business Forum in this special area of the Spielwarenmesse. This knowledge forum, free-of-charge to visitors, will tackle a specific topic each day, such as licences and product range policies, offering comprehensive information on current market developments. Industry professionals Reyne Rice (USA) and Dr. Maria Costa (Spain) will go into greater depth about the trends in the TrendGallery in daily presentations. Further information on the special show can be found at www.spielwarenmesse.de/en/trendgallery. A more detailed overview of the programme of events will be available from October at www.spielwarenmesse.de/en/toybusinessforum.
