The race for the ToyAward 2017 is on

  • The ToyAward 2017 opens for applications from 1 September
  • The four age-based categories are revised
  • Awards to be presented at the Spielwarenmesse Opening Ceremony on 31 January 2017

Exhibitors participating in the Spielwarenmesse can start submitting their new products for the ToyAward 2017, the Spielwarenmesse innovation prize, from 1 September 2016. This is a unique and free opportunity for exhibitors to make their products stand out from the 75,000 or so innovations appearing at the fair. The eleven-strong jury selects the products for the coveted award in four age-specific categories, which this year have been slightly revised. Commenting on the changes, Christian Ulrich, Director Marketing of Spielwarenmesse eG, states: “By creating flowing transitions and extending the last category to adults, we’re responding to changes in a market that is increasingly breaking away from rigid age groups.”

The four categories:

  • Baby&Infant: 0 – 3 years (previously 0 – 2 years)
  • PreSchool: 3 – 6 years (previously 3 – 5 years)
  • SchoolKids: 6 – 10 years
  • Teenager&Adults: 10 years + (previously Teenager&Family 11 years +)

The jury is composed of educationists, market researchers, sales agents and toy safety experts. Together, they assess the toys in terms of their originality, safety, fun value, workmanship, quality, accessibility of the concept and sales potential at retail. Three products are nominated from each category and made public at the Spielwarenmesse’s main press conference on 26th January 2017.  The Awards Presentation takes place during the Opening Ceremony on 31st January 2017.

Last year, 344 companies submitted 616 products for a chance to win one of the coveted ToyAwards. This represents a new record and bears witness to the growing popularity of this prize. Confirming that the Awards are a worthwhile undertaking, Marcus Abt, Managing Director of Splash Toys comments: “For us, the ToyAward is like a miracle from heaven. We’re fairly new to the German market and this ToyAward really opened doors for us.” The German distributor for Zuru, whose Bunch O Balloons won the ToyAward 2016 in the SchoolKids category, received a surge in interest for its own products as a result.  The other winners in 2016 were “Globber 5 in 1” from GLOBBER TEMPLAR (Baby&Infant), Revell’s “JuniorKit“ (PreSchool) and the “KosmoBits” from KOSMOS Verlag (Teenager&Family).
