As part of Nuremberg’s ToyCity initiative, Spielwarenmesse eG once again launched a competition to find the best ToyCocktail in town which will be served during the Spielwarenmesse. Taking place on 5 December 2017, the competition, now in its fourteenth year, was hosted by last year’s winner Enchilada in Nuremberg. Nine inner-city bars were competing for the top spot, attempting to impress the jury of four experts with their creative concoctions. The drink that achieved the highest number of points was “Toyropa” by Bar Europa. The winning ToyCocktail will be served at special events during the Spielwarenmesse from 31 January to 4 February and at the nine participating bars around the city.
A special cocktail in Nuremberg
The winner Karel Jahns rose to the challenge of creating a very special cocktail. “The great thing about being a barkeeper is that you can experiment with different ideas. And I have to say, it’s a great feeling to win over the judges on the ToyCocktail jury. The Spielwarenmesse made me think back to my childhood and the kind of flavours I associate with it.” The result: a ToyCocktail that has a nostalgic flavour reminiscent of fruity orange sweets.
Cocktail professionals at work
The ToyCocktail competition attracts prolific experts, both behind and in front of the bar. Using all the tricks of the trade, the barkeepers shake and mix their cocktails to impress both the jury and the other participants. The jury members include three bar experts – Adriano Paulus and Andreas Till, both from Munich, and Bernd Schäfer from Nuremberg – as well as Berlind Bernemann, Senior Sales Manager Spielwarenmesse eG. The cocktails are judged according to the official competition criteria defined by the German Barkeepers’ Union. The competitors are expected to deliver the complete package of flavour, appearance and aroma. Jury member Andreas Till explains: “The cocktail must demonstrate that the barkeeper has given it a lot of thought and has successfully brought the different components together to create a unique and harmonious drink.” Sharing the podium with “Toyropa” was last year’s winner Selim Landeck from Nuremberg’s Enchilada, who came second with “PiTOYa Daiquiri”, and “Toy Traders Tipple” by long-standing participant Sigrid Klein, Gelbes Haus, who was awarded third place.
The winning ToyCocktail will be served at participating bars during the Spielwarenmesse from 31 January to 4 February:
The ToyCocktail is one of many ToyCity initiatives, with which the trade-only Spielwarenmesse brings the “Spirit of Play” to the city centre. The exhibitors and visitors at the Spielwarenmesse will also have the opportunity to try the ToyCocktail at a variety of special evening events.
