A drink for the 70th Spielwarenmesse

  • 15th ToyCocktail chosen from nine creations
  • The winner is the “Pill-toy-rika!” from Gasthaus Pillhofer

For the past 15 years as part of the ToyCity initiative, Spielwarenmesse eG has invited Nuremberg’s bars to participate in the ToyCocktail Competition and to create a cocktail for the international visitors to the trade fair. This time round, it had to be a very special drink. After all, the Spielwarenmesse is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2019. Held on 4 December 2018 at last year’s winning Bar Europa, the competition featured nine participants, mixing and shaking for all they were worth. Ultimately, it was the “Pill-toy-rika!” by Shirley Bleisteiner from Gasthaus Pillhofer that won over the jury of four experts. The ToyCocktail will be served during the Spielwarenmesse from 30 January to 3 February 2019 at all nine participating bars around the city.

Since the first ToyCocktail competition, familiar names continue to appear among the contenders, including Gelbes Haus, Skybar and Enchilada. This year, the competition has attracted one or two newcomers, such as the Australian Bar & Kitchen and Bar Seagull at Nuremberg’s Mövenpick Hotel. The competitors are all given a fair crack of the whip. Sitting on the other side of the bar, Bernd Schäfer from Nuremberg, Adriano Paulus from Munich, Sven Goller from Bamberg and Berlind Bernemann of Spielwarenmesse eG, judge the creative concoctions in accordance with the official competition rules of the Deutsche Barkeeper-Union. The concept creates a level playing field and is tried and trusted, as long-standing jury member Bernd Schäfer explains: “This system allows every aspect of a drink to be included in the judging process. To achieve enough points to win, the overall package of flavour, appearance and aroma has to work.”

Winner Shirley Bleisteiner feels honoured: “I’m really surprised I came first. It’s fantastic that my creation won the 15th ToyCocktail competition and has been chosen for the anniversary edition of the Spielwarenmesse.” In keeping with the occasion, the victorious cocktail is red just like the well-known Spielwarenmesse logo. Fabian Heß of Die Rote Bar came second with his “Premium Pinkroni Spritz-Toy”. Third place went to “Toyreka!” by Sebastian Bauer and Sigrid Klein from Gelbes Haus.

The ToyCocktail is one of many ToyCity promotions with which the trade-only Spielwarenmesse brings the “Spirit of Play” to Nuremberg’s city centre. The exhibitors and visitors will be served the ToyCocktail at various evening events at the fair.
