15 finalists in contention for the Spielwarenmesse ToyAwards

  • 433 exhibitors enter a total of 838 products
  • Winners to be announced at Opening Ceremony on 29 January

When the industry gathers in Nuremberg for the 70th anniversary edition of the Spielwarenmesse (30.1.-3.2.2019), the 120,000 or so innovations will be of key interest to trade visitors. Introduced by Spielwarenmesse eG, the ToyAwards are accorded to outstanding products every year, providing buyers and retailers with valuable guidance. The innovation prize ranks among the most respected accolades in the industry. This year, the coveted ToyAwards will be presented in the new Start-Up category and the four age-specific categories Baby & Infant (0-3 years), PreSchool (3-6 years), SchoolKids (6-10 years) and Teenager & Adults (10 years and older).

To make it easier for exhibitors to take part in the competition, a digital preliminary round was introduced this year for the first time. During this stage, the jury of experts narrowed down the entries based on the criteria Originality, Fun Factor, Accessibility of the Product Concept, and Sales Potential at Retail. The new approach was clearly welcomed by participating companies. This year, 433 exhibitors (2018: 397) entered a total of 838 innovations (2018: 643) which is testimony to the continued appeal of this accolade.

The products that made it through the preliminary round were subsequently sent to Spielwarenmesse eG for further evaluation. The jury then considered the remaining entries at a meeting and selected three exceptional innovations in each of the five categories. In the final evaluation, the criteria applied in the preliminary round were extended to include Workmanship & Quality, and Safety.
