Opening its doors for the 68th time, the Spielwarenmesse is demonstrating once more the true extent of its international standing. In its role as the world’s most important toy industry event, the Spielwarenmesse provides market decision makers with a comprehensive overview and access to the latest trends. Running from 1 to 6 February 2017, the fair expects to welcome more than 70,000 trade buyers, wending their way to the exhibition centre in Nuremberg from around 120 countries. They shall be greeted by 75,000 new products – more than at any other toy trade fair. A new best has also been recorded for the exhibitors, with 2,871 companies (up from 2,851 in 2016) showing their ranges of games, hobby and leisure products. 74.0% of the exhibitor total is from abroad, up from 72.6% in 2016. The world’s leading toy fair gives visitors professional guidance in selecting their product ranges, based on the three trends “Body and Mind”, “Girl Power”, and “Swap & Collect”, the ToyAward, the Tech2Play Promotion Area and the Special Area for Baby & Infant Articles. The trade-specific programme at the Toy Business Forum and a long-term partnership with the International Licensing Industry and Merchandisers’ Association LIMA provide visitors with expert advice and valuable information on the daily running of their businesses.
Always one step ahead
Whichever way one looks at it – be it in terms of exhibitors, visitors, product spectrum or floor area – the Spielwarenmesse is ahead of its international competitors on all counts. The facts and figures speak for themselves. In a move to live up to the expectations of the market but also of the fair itself, the Spielwarenmesse is offering trade buyers a wide selection of highlights in 2017. One such focal point is the Tech2Play Promotion Area in Hall 4A, in which the trade fair once again demonstrates its eye for tomorrow’s products. The 400m² space features the latest technological toys divided into five categories: “Electronic Pets”, “Robot Toys”, “RC Drones”, “Virtual Play” and “3D Printing”. The different theme islands boast a striking black-and-white design and encourage visitors to get involved and test the products for themselves.
Focus on infants
Another eye-catching space is the new Special Area for Baby & Infant Articles. Situated between Halls 2 and 3, it reflects the extensive range of products for this age group across six segments: Baby Toys, Baby Textile, Travel Systems, Care & Food, Home & Safety, and Licensed Articles. This area is in a good strategic position as the surrounding halls are largely devoted to toys for infants and industry-related ranges. Located in the light and airy passageway, this new Special Area is a source of inspiration for retailers looking for an attractive side line that fits in perfectly with many different business models. This Area also boasts a Quiet Zone and hospitality.
Trends, trends, trends
Hall 3A is perhaps best described as the Spielwarenmesse’s shop window
for trends. It is here, for example, that first-time participants at the New Exhibitor Center (NEC) and the Pavilion for Young German Companies, which is sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), present their special product ideas. The TrendGallery (www.spielwarenmesse.de/en/trendgallery) next door brings to life the three new trends for 2017, identified by the Spielwarenmesse’s ten-strong TrendCommittee on their travels around the world: “Body and Mind” uses play to bring body and spirit into balance, helping children cope with the stresses of everyday life. “Girl Power” encourages girls to try their hand at new ideas and to follow their goals with confidence. “Swap & Collect” brings a breath of fresh air to the classic theme of trading and collecting by including new aspects such as licensing.
ToyAward posts record number of entries
Redesigned and covering an area of roughly 1000m², the TrendGallery also showcases the nominees and winners of the ToyAward. The fresh climb in the number of entries bears witness to the accolade’s high standing in the global toy industry. For the ToyAward 2017, a total of 361 companies (2016: 344) submitted 635 products (2016: 616) for a chance to win the coveted title. The four age-specific categories have been adjusted slightly in response to changes in the market. The previous Teenager&Family category for children over 10 years of age has been renamed Teenager&Adult. The jury of experts has selected twelve products based on criteria such as play value, originality, safety, craftsmanship & quality, comprehensibility of the product concept and market potential. The ToyAward winners will be announced at the Spielwarenmesse’s Opening Ceremony on 31 January 2017.
Licences take on a new dimension
The Spielwarenmesse will also see the topic of licensing take centre stage. Accordingly, trade buyers have the chance to gain an insight into the latest international licensing trends and licensed toys across all twelve product segments. In addition, the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA) is exhibiting at the Spielwarenmesse for the first time. Located in the Foyer of Hall 12.0, the Association’s stand is a hub for both licensors and licensees. LIMA’s CEO Charles Riotto from the USA and his German colleague Peter Hollo are among the speakers at the Toy Business Forum (Hall 3A) when, on Thursday 2nd February 2017, all attention will turn to the topic entitled “Let’s License – keeping business moving and shaking all year long”.
Sharing knowledge – compact and concise
The topics addressed on the other days similarly reflect the needs of today’s retailers. Running from 1 to 5 February 2017, from 1 pm to
3 pm, the Toy Business Forum presents nationally and internationally renowned experts, such as Reyne Rice from New York, talking about the latest trends and developments in the industry. The first day of the fair will look at “Trends in Retailing”. On Friday, attention will be directed at “Viewing the bigger picture” and devising a smart product range policy. A special feature of this year’s programme is the “Toy Business Academy” on Saturday when sales coach Jörg Winter focuses on sales staff on the shop floor.
