Spring is dawning at the Spielwarenmesse International Toy Fair Nürnberg. The number of exhibitors has grown to 2,683 companies (2010: 2,625) and the Toys go green special is revealing the green aspects of the toy industry. For traders and buyers, a visit to the International Toy Fair 2011 brings a boost for their know-how, their overview of new products and their personal network. From 3–8 February 2011, the Nuremberg exhibition centre with its imposing new central (Mitte) entrance is the destination for some 76,000 trade visitors from over 100 countries.
Spielwarenmesse eG has combined the host of programme features at the world’s biggest fair for the toy industry in 2011 into three modules for success: ToyKnowHow covers the fair’s whole knowledge programme; the new products programme ToyInnovation provides an overview of the very latest products, and ToyNetwork is the toy industry’s network that meets in Nuremberg to cultivate existing contacts and make new ones. This particularly includes the events that focus on networking.
ToyKnowHow – lets knowledge grow
The knowledge programme at the International Toy Fair 2011 includes the Toys go green special show in the central entrance area, the 2nd Global Toy Conference in CCN Ost on 8.2.2011, and the Toy Business Forum in the InnovationCenter in hall 4, daily from 1–3 p.m. from Friday to Tuesday.
Sustainability is a focus of attention at the coming International Toy Fair and is tackled by all the knowledge events mentioned. The Toys go green theme islands in the central (Mitte) entrance area present various aspects of sustainable toys and toy production. How can the stages of the value creation chain such as material selection, packaging, transport and logistics be made more environment-friendly? What do the different labels stand for and how can manufacturers communicate environmental friendliness together with the product. The TÜV Rheinland Group as the toy fair’s cooperation partner is present at the fair to advise and answer questions on sustainability. 59 manufacturers present their products as examples on the theme islands and give product presentations. The presentation is supplemented from a consumer and trader viewpoint by the study on “Toys go green – Sustainability in Toys”. This study commissioned by Spielwarenmesse eG was conducted under the direction of Prof. Dr. Nicole Koschate, Chair of Marketing Intelligence at the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, and will be presented at the Toy Business Forum at 1 p.m. on 5.2.2011.
The 2nd Global Toy Conference on 8.2.2011 gives retailers and manufacturers the opportunity to deal intensively with the issues of sustainability, social media, online marketing & trade, and toy safety. The conference also includes a panel discussion on “The principles and implementation of the current safety assessment of toys” with members of the European Commission. ToyInnovation – provides an overview of new products
The manufacturers present an estimated 70,000 new products in Nuremberg. The innovation programme organized by Spielwarenmesse eG gives visitors an overview of the new products and is supported by the organizer’s InnovationCenter in hall 4 and InnovationGuide. The products that particularly stand out for play fun, creativity, safety or sustainability receive the ToyAward at the opening ceremony on 2.2.2011. This award for new products at the International Toy Fair is presented in five categories. During the fair from 3–8 February 2011, visitors can see the winners and nominations in the InnovationCenter in hall 4, where they are called upon to choose the main winner. All 15 candidates are also presented on the Internet at www.toy-award.de. The InnovationGuide is also an overview of many other new products exhibited by the companies in all the halls.
ToyNetwork – networking in Nuremberg
The many opportunities for making contacts at the International Toy Fair include three get-togethers that appeal to individual target groups. The LicenseCenter and the YourToyCom Lounge, both in the central (Mitte) entrance area, and the GamesCafé in hall 10.0 B-05.
The LicenseCenter has moved to the foyer of Brüssel hall, where the LicenseLounge becomes the get-together for the licensing and toy industries daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Thursday to Saturday. Besides the current license themes, the media partners’ International Trend Selection presents the top 3 license themes from the respective national markets in 2011. The LicenseGuide, which can be accessed via the online catalogue, contains 434 entries and is a reference work for other license themes on the exhibitors’ stands.
The YourToyCom Lounge is a service for the around 7,500 members of the toy industry’s professional online business community. A good opportunity for the members to meet their virtual contacts personally in the lounge in the central entrance area.
The GamesCafé is the centre for contact with the professional international games community. Here traders meet game designers, game experts, publishers or game initiatives. A small exhibition from the collection of the German Games Archive in Nuremberg presents games dealing with environmental protection. Game designers present their new inventions at the “red table” from Thursday to Sunday. The GamesCafé is a cooperation between the German Games Archive in Nuremberg, the Game Designer Association and Spielwarenmesse eG.
International Toy Fair shows the whole variety of toy manufacturers
15 nations show their range of international toys in 19 country pavilions, including the Best of China pavilion. Spielwarenmesse eG is organizing this pavilion in hall 11.0, previously called the China Pavilion, for the third time. 61 Chinese exhibitors with high quality standards are taking part this time, which has increased the display area to 1,030 m², twice as large as last year (2010: 534 m²).
Visitors can update on toy safety in the Testing & Inspecting Center, where all the test and inspection institutes at the International Toy Fair are concentrated. The European Commission / DG Entr. Unit C.1 Regulatory Approach for the Free Circulation of Goods is taking part for the first time as a new exhibitor to intensify dialogue with the industry. This gives exhibitors and visitors a central port of call for obtaining answers to their questions on toy safety standards. Live demonstrations of test procedures take place daily in the mini lab from 10–11.30 a.m. and 3–4.30 p.m.
There are altogether 325 new exhibitors at the International Toy Fair. 58 of these from 26 countries are exhibiting in the New Exhibitor Center in hall 11.1. Next door to them is the Young Innovative Companies pavilion, which is represented at the International Toy Fair for the first time. The 20 young entrepreneurs from all over Germany are sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.
The programme of the International Toy Fair 2011 will initiate many new ideas and inspirations among the participants. The knowledge, the overview of new products and the contacts they obtain in Nuremberg give traders and manufacturers good conditions for achieving a positive result at the end of the business year 2011 with the right range of products.
