NPD: "Sales of toys in Australia increased 69%"

Australia saw the strongest growth across all global major markets

  • The Australian toy sector witnessed the strongest growth across all major global markets in recent weeks, according to new data from NPD.

For the week ending 29 March, NPD reports that Australia’s toy industry saw dollars increase 69 per cent and unit sales increase 29 per cent, making it the best performing week in 2020 so far.

Five out of the 11 supercategories grew in dollar sales in the week ending 29 March, with building sets leading the charge growing 55 per cent, representing 44 per cent of total dollars gained.

This lead from building sets is affirmed by LEGO making up seven of the top 10 products for the week.

Following building sets was games and puzzles, which grew 417 per cent and accounted for 37 per cent of total dollars gained.

But it's not just kids playing games, with NPD reporting that all games and puzzles subclasses grew in the week. Family board/action games and adult puzzles grew while children's games represented 55 per cent of dollar sales in this supercategory.

Other categories experienced increases too, with arts and crafts, outdoor and sports toys and youth electronics all growing.
