Disney and Universal sue AI firm Midjourney over images
Disney and Universal, along with other major film studios, have filed a lawsuit against the AI company Midjourney. The studios allege that Midjourney used copyrighted images from iconic films and franchises – such as “Star Wars,” “Frozen,” and “Jurassic Park” – to train its AI and generate new images without permission.
According to the lawsuit, Midjourney’s AI tools analyze and replicate vast amounts of copyrighted material, creating new content that closely resembles the original works. The studios argue this constitutes a violation of intellectual property rights and are seeking damages as well as an injunction to prevent further use of their content by the AI firm.
Background
This legal action highlights the growing conflict between the entertainment industry and AI companies over the use of copyrighted material for training generative AI models. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for how creative works are protected in the age of artificial intelligence.
