The Little Mermaid achieves a brilliant start

The live-action remake of the 1989 animated classic has gotten off to a successful start in theaters. The film, starring Halle Bailey as the mermaid Ariel and Melissa McCarthy as the sea witch Ursula, grossed nearly $100 million in North America over Memorial Day weekend, according to studio estimates. That makes the remake of the Disney classic the fifth-biggest Memorial Day weekend release of all time, bumping the 10th installment of the "Fast and Furios" saga, Fast X, from first place on the box office charts. At the same time, for the release of the remake, people gathered for the California Mermaid Convention. A glittering and diverse event where hundreds of fans became "sea people" for a weekend.
