1.3 Million illegal products removed from online marketplace

The Danish Business Authority has secured the removal of 1.3 million illegal products from a single online marketplace, the Danish Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs said.

Serious safety risks

The products included self-igniting chargers, dangerous teddy bears and toxic cosmetics from third countries that do not meet Danish and European requirements. According to the ministry, such products pose a serious safety risk to European consumers, undermine fair competition in the EU internal market and harm European businesses.

Danish Minister for Industry and Business Affairs Martin Lidegaard travelled to Brussels to call for stricter rules for online platforms and greater responsibility for the products sold through their websites.

Discussions for a new product law

During a meeting with Stéphane Séjourné, the European Commissioner for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy, Lidegaard was also due to discuss the European Commission’s forthcoming proposal for a new product law aimed at restricting the entry of illegal products into the EU.

Lidegaard said the removal of 1.3 million illegal products from a single platform highlighted the scale of the problem and argued that platforms should be required to take greater responsibility for the products they offer, citing both fair competition and consumer safety.
