Agreement on first rules for artificial intelligence

Members of the European Parliament have agreed on the first rules for artificial intelligence.

The regulation aims to set harmonised rules for the market, use and deployment of AI systems in the EU.

The text includes bans on certain AI practices, specific requirements for high-risk AI systems, transparency rules for AI systems that interact with individuals, and rules for market surveillance.

The regulation prohibits the exploitation of vulnerable groups, including children, causing physical or psychological harm.

The text specified that the conformity assessment procedure of the Toys Directive should be applied when AI systems are toys or a safety component of toys covered by the Toys Directive.

The next step is to start discussions with EU countries on the final text. The aim is to reach an agreement by the end of 2023.
