"Barbie" also overtakes "Super Mario Bros: Will the "Harry Potter" record fall now?

Barbie" broke records on its first weekend in cinemas.

There is no end in sight to the hype: No film has been seen by more moviegoers in North America this year than Greta Gerwig's colorful doll adaptation.

Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" opened in theaters in July 2023 and broke two records in its very first weekend, becoming not only the most successful theatrical

debut of the year, but also the most successful film by a female director. Even a month after its release, the production's success is unstoppable.

In North America, "Barbie" has now overtaken the "Super Mario Bros. movie" to take the title of highest-grossing movie of the year.Since its official release,

the comedy starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling has grossed $575.4 million at the box office - compared with $574 million for "Super Mario.“

Worldwide, "Barbie" has now reached a box office total of 1.3 billion U.S. dollars. Here, too, the comedy could surpass the computer-animated adventure film

in the coming days. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic's production brought in $1.35 billion. The two films were the only ones to crack the billion mark this year, he said.

In addition, the comedy was the fastest release of any film from the Warner Bros. studio to reach the billion-dollar mark after 17 days in theaters.

Speculation is rife as to whether "Barbie" will even surpass "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" (2012) and thus become the film studio's most successful worldwide release of all time.

At that time, the last part of the story about the famous wizard had grossed 1.34 billion U.S. dollars.
