Barbie movie cracks $1 billion mark

Just weeks after its release in theaters, the "Barbie" movie has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. That made Greta Gerwig the first solo female director to surpass that mark, according to industry service Exhibitor Relations on Sunday.

Women co-directed three other billion-dollar blockbusters, including "Frozen" ($1.3 billion) and "Frozen 2" ($1.45 billion), both co-produced by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, and "Captain Marvel" ($1.1 billion), directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.

The blockbuster starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as her boyfriend Ken also reached that magic mark in just 17 days, faster than any other film in the 100-year history of the Warner Bros. film studio, according to the company. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" had previously held that record at 19 days.

According to the data, the film has so far grossed $459 million in North America. Worldwide, it came in at 1.03 billion dollars. This makes it the second most successful film so far this year behind "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." In the film, which was promoted with a large marketing campaign, Barbie and Ken leave the pink plastic world of Barbieland and get to know real life in Los Angeles.
