Call for new safety standards for AI-powered toys

AI-powered toys are becoming more popular, but experts are increasingly concerned about their safety and impact on children. These toys are designed to act as companions and learning tools, using features like voice interaction and storytelling. However, tests show that some of them can give inappropriate or even dangerous responses. For example, certain toys have explained unsafe actions or engaged in explicit conversations.

Researchers also warn that these toys often misunderstand social cues and may interrupt or confuse children during interactions. This could negatively affect how kids develop communication and social skills.

Another major issue is privacy. Many AI toys collect and share data, sometimes with third parties, raising concerns about how children’s information is handled.

Experts are not calling for a complete ban, but they do recommend stricter regulation, better safety standards, and more transparency from manufacturers. They also advise parents to supervise their children’s use of these toys and carefully review privacy policies.
