Chiikawa Movie tops Singapore box office for Japanese anime films

Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island has become the highest-grossing Japanese anime film of 2026 in Singapore as of September 9, according to Medialink Films Singapore.

The milestone came just weeks after the film’s local theatrical release on August 20.

Based on the world created by Nagano, the movie follows Chiikawa and his friends as they travel to a mysterious island. Nagano also wrote the screenplay, while Kei Oikawa directed the film.

The film’s performance in Singapore marks another international milestone for Chiikawa and demonstrates the property’s ability to connect with audiences beyond Japan.

Starbright Licensing represents Chiikawa in Italy through its agreement with Spiralcute International.
