DIHK updates publication "Handling Packaging in Europe"
Even though the EU Directive that came into force in mid-2018 has led to numerous legal adjustments, national regulations on handling packaging still vary widely. Companies that place packaged goods on the European internal market must observe the requirements of the respective country - this also applies to European third countries. In Denmark, for example, a special consumption tax is levied on certain types of packaging; in Greece, distributors must participate in a dual system and register with the National Producers Register; in Turkey, the use of certain proportions of recycled materials is mandatory: The DIHK has compiled all these details and more3 in its freshly updated overview "Handling Packaging in Europe“.
New additions since the last revision in April 2023 are the regulations on Poland and Greece. On 58 pages, readers can now find out who is subject to the packaging regulations for the current 27 European countries, which packaging falls within the scope of application, or which labeling obligations and special regulations exist.
In order to harmonize the different regulations throughout the EU, the European Commission published a proposal for a new packaging regulation on November 30, 2022. This is currently being discussed by the European Parliament and the Council. It may be years before the regulations are adopted and come into force. Until then, the circumstances may also change again and again within the countries. In this respect, the publication reflects the state of affairs as of July 31, 2023.
