Disney invests in a new comic subscription service
In collaboration with Webtoon, Disney plans to build a new comic platform that will include digital editions of Disney comics from the Marvel, Star Wars, and 20th Century Studios portfolios. Both companies announced this in a joint statement after having already announced plans to collaborate last month.
Subscription service
The press release states that 35,000 digital comics from Disney will be bundled on this comic platform. Disney already offers a subscription service for English-language digital comics called Marvel Unlimited, which includes 30,000 comics and costs $10 per month. Disney intends the new platform to be seen as an extension of Marvel Unlimited – whether this will also involve price changes remains to be seen.
Possible international launch
Disney has also not provided any information about a possible international launch of the upcoming comic platform. It is not known whether translated comic editions will also be available there. Through the Disney+ Perks program, subscribers to Disney's streaming service will even be able to access a selection of curated comics at no extra charge.
