eBay launches Authenticity Guarantee for trading cards in the UK

eBay has launched its Authenticity Guarantee service for trading cards in the UK, making it the first online marketplace in the country to standardize authentication for eligible high-value card purchases of £500 and above.

What the service covers

The service covers collectible card games, sports trading cards, and non-sports cards, with the goal of increasing trust and confidence among collectors as demand in the category continues to grow strongly. Popular interest on the platform includes Pokémon cards such as Charizard ex and Ancient Mew, as well as sports and Formula 1 trading cards, with Lando Norris among the most searched British athletes in 2025.

Specialist authentication facility

Under the process, eligible cards are shipped by the seller to a specialist authentication facility, where experts from Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) conduct a detailed physical inspection to verify authenticity and condition. Once approved, the card is sent to the buyer via tracked next-day delivery. A tamper-evident label with a QR code is attached, allowing buyers to access details about the item and its authentication journey. If returns are supported, the item is re-verified before being returned to the seller.

Rollout began on 6 May

The service also applies to purchases made through eBay Live, extending the same verification standards to live-stream shopping. Rollout began on 6 May and will expand through June, with all eligible trading cards priced at £500 and above expected to be included. Listings covered by the program are marked with an “Authenticity Guarantee” badge, and the service is provided at no additional cost to buyers or sellers.
