EU Parliament approves new battery rules
The European Parliament has now approved new rules for the design and manufacture of batteries sold in the EU. The new regulation will replace the current Batteries Directive 2006/66/EC.
The current rules will be revised. Stricter requirements for removability and replaceability will be introduced. A duty of care for economic operators - with the exception of SMEs - will be introduced.
EU Member States still need to formally approve the text before it is published in the Official Journal of the EU and enters into force.
The new rules will apply 6 months after publication, but there are numerous transition periods for various provisions.
