EU Safety Sweep: Half of Online Baby Care Products Fail Safety Requirements
In the second quarter of 2025, national market surveillance authorities of the Consumer Safety Network (CSN), on behalf of the European Commission, conducted a comprehensive product safety sweep focused on baby care items such as carriers and pacifiers. The investigation targeted 1,741 product listings from 47 online marketplace providers, including both EU-based and international sellers. Special attention was given to five Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs)—Aliexpress, Amazon, Shein, Temu, and Zalando—as well as smaller online shops.
The sweep assessed three key areas: compliance with minimum safety and traceability information, enforcement actions by authorities, and registration of marketplaces in the EU Safety Gate Portal. Results revealed that only 52% of products met the EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) requirements, with VLOPs achieving a higher compliance rate of 65%. Authorities issued 252 orders to remove dangerous or non-compliant products, 62% of which targeted VLOPs. Notably, 16 products had already been flagged as hazardous in the EU Safety Gate system.
Despite these efforts, 48% of listings lacked essential manufacturer details, and some removed products reappeared online. Only 53% of marketplaces were registered in the Safety Gate Portal, though VLOPs performed better at 80%. The European Commission and CSN have announced ongoing monitoring and further sweeps to strengthen consumer protection.
