Federal judge temporarily stops Warner Bros. and Paramount deal

A U.S. federal judge has temporarily halted Paramount Skydance’s planned acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, granting a two-week pause after a coalition of 12 U.S. states challenged the deal on antitrust grounds. The court found that the states had raised sufficiently serious competition concerns to justify delaying the transaction while the case proceeds.

The lawsuit argues that the proposed merger would significantly reduce competition in the entertainment industry, potentially leading to higher prices, fewer film and television productions, and negative consequences for movie theaters. A hearing is scheduled for August 3 to determine whether the injunction should remain in place for the duration of the legal proceedings.

The temporary delay could have financial implications for Paramount, as the merger agreement includes penalties if the transaction is not completed by the agreed deadline. Paramount continues to defend the acquisition, arguing that the combined company would be better positioned to compete with major technology and streaming rivals.
