Global Book Market 2023: Sales growth due to rising prices
GfK and NIQ have joined forces this year to form the world's leading consumer intelligence company. The data from GfK Entertainment, a subsidiary of GfK, and Nielsen BookData, a subsidiary of NIQ, now together provide a unique overview of the global book market. The new book market report shows rising sales for most of the 16 countries surveyed.
Price increases in the global book market
In 2023, the global book market recorded an increase in sales in many places, accompanied by significantly higher prices. As the 16-country analysis shows, the gains ranged from single-digit values in the economically strong sales regions of France (+1.3 percent) and the United Kingdom (+1.8 percent) to substantial increases in the emerging book markets of India (+8.7 percent) and Mexico (+10.0 percent). Only four countries, including Australia (-1.9 percent) and South Africa (-0.2 percent), ended the first eight months of the year in the red.
Travel books booming, comic trend over for the time being
After the post-Corona year of 2022, travel guides were increasingly used again, and this trend is now continuing. The travel book segment is booming and is one of the fastest growing genres in 2023. Half of all 16 book markets analyzed even reported double-digit sales increases for this product group. Comics and especially mangas, on the other hand, will have to accept heavy losses after some very strong years. In Spain, for example, this amounted to -10.9 percent, and in Italy to -9.1 percent.
