Global football merchandise market: projected to reach $29.1 billion by 2035

A new report by Future Market Insights forecasts strong long-term growth for the global football merchandise market. The market is expected to increase from USD 15.8 billion in 2025 to USD 29.1 billion by 2035, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.3%. Growth is being driven by the global popularity of football, increasing fan engagement and expanding e-commerce access to official merchandise.

Significant share of the global licensed sports goods industry

The report highlights that football merchandise now represents a significant share of the global licensed sports goods industry. Apparel remains the largest product segment, accounting for an estimated 42% of market revenue in 2025, while club football merchandise dominates the category segment with a projected 72% market share. Mid-priced products are expected to remain the most popular price segment because they balance affordability with official branding and quality.

Key growth drivers

Key growth drivers include the international popularity of leagues such as the Premier League, La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, alongside the commercial impact of major tournaments including the FIFA World Cup. The report also points to social media, influencer marketing and direct-to-fan digital sales as major contributors to merchandise growth. Personalised jerseys, limited-edition collections and collaborations between football clubs and fashion brands are helping to position football merchandise as both sportswear and lifestyle fashion.

Asia as a major growth region

The study identifies Asia as a major growth region, with China expected to record the highest forecast CAGR at 8.5%, followed by India at 7.9%. Germany is forecast to grow by 7.2%, supported by strong club loyalty, Bundesliga popularity and growing digital fan engagement. The UK and the US are also expected to see continued expansion, driven by digital merchandising strategies and increasing football fandom.

E-commerce and official club websites

According to the report, e-commerce and official club websites are transforming the industry by enabling clubs and brands to sell directly to fans worldwide. Digital-first strategies, customised products and online-exclusive launches are helping clubs strengthen fan relationships while increasing profit margins. The report also notes that celebrity players such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappé continue to play a major role in driving merchandise sales through endorsements and global brand influence.
