Lego introduces the Lego Smart Play System

The LEGO Group has unveiled LEGO SMART Play, a new platform that combines physical LEGO building with responsive digital technology to create interactive, screen-free play experiences. Announced at CES 2026, the system is powered by the LEGO SMART Brick and marks a major evolution of the LEGO System in Play. The first SMART Play-enabled sets will launch on March 1, starting with products based on the LEGO Star Wars universe.

Custom-designed Chip with sensors

At the center of the platform is the LEGO SMART Brick, a 2x4 brick containing a custom-designed chip with sensors, accelerometers, light and sound detection, a color scanner, responsive lights and a built-in speaker, all powered by wireless charging. The technology allows LEGO creations to react in real time to how they are moved, held or played with, producing dynamic sounds, lights and behaviors.

Working through interaction

LEGO SMART Play works through the interaction of three components: the SMART Brick, SMART Tags and SMART Minifigures. SMART Tags tell the brick what role it should take on, while SMART Minifigures trigger unique sounds, moods and reactions, helping bring stories to life. Together, these elements unlock varied play patterns, hidden features and replayable experiences.

Integrating the system into current collections

All SMART components are compatible with existing LEGO bricks, allowing children to integrate the system into their current collections. LEGO describes SMART Play as its most significant innovation since the introduction of the minifigure, designed to respond directly to a child’s imagination and actions during play.
