Milestone for "The Witcher 3": Over 50 million copies sold
Very few game brands manage to reach more than 50 million buyers. Amongst them: Grand Theft Auto, Minecraft, Mario Kart and new to this elite club: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which was released in 2015 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
8 years after its market launch, the game recently passed the sales figures milestone of 50 million sold copies.
The key figure can be taken from the current annual report of the listed publisher CD Projekt, which is one of the largest game producers in Europe.
The third part thus represents two-thirds of The Witcher's total sales, which now stand at 75 million units. Like its two predecessors and Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3 was developed by the studio's subsidiary CD Projekt Red, which specializes in particularly lush open-world role-playing games.
In addition to the successful Netflix series, the free upgrade for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, which was released shortly before Christmas 2022, probably contributed to the continuing popularity of the role-playing game around the 'Witcher' Geralt von Riva. A dedicated The Witcher 3: Complete Edition* has also been on sale since January, which includes the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions plus digital extras in addition to the main game. Retail distribution will be handled by Bandai Namco Entertainment.
CD Projekt (Red) will continue to rely on The Witcher brand in the future - for example, in the form of another trilogy and a remake of Part 1.
