Moomin and Annapurna are working on Moomin film

Moomins are coming to life as an animated feature film, written and directed by Rebecca Sugar. The film, to be created by media company Annapurna, will be the first Moomin film produced in the United States.

The new Moomin film is the first Hollywood adaptation of Tove Jansson’s stories about the Moomin family and their friends. The film will be created by the entertainment company Annapurna’s animation division, founded in 2022 by former Disney animation execs Robert Baird and Andrew Millstein, and known for the Academy Award-nominated NIMONA.

The film will be written and directed by Rebecca Sugar, the creator of the award-winning animation series Steven Universe. Julia Pistor, who was behind animated features including The SpongeBob Squarepants movies and The Rugrats films, will produce the new Moomin movie.

“We’re honored to bring Tove Jansson’s timeless vision to the big screen” said Robert Baird and Andrew Millstein. “Along with Rebecca and Julia, we can’t wait to introduce these beloved characters—and the humor, heart, and subversive spirit Tove brought to her work—to new audiences.”

The film will be based on the Moomin novels written by Tove Jansson. The first novel, Comet in Moominland, was published in 1946, followed by seven other novels. The Moomin books have been published in over 60 different languages, with television adaptations broadcast in more than 120 countries.
