Museum pulls rare Pokémon card from circulation after fracas

The Pokémon x Van Gogh collaboration has come to an abrupt end. The museum in Amsterdam will no longer issue Pikachu promo cards due to security concerns.

Security concerns at the museum

As recently as September, the Dutch Van Gogh Museum was upside down. Countless Pokémon fans stormed the museum in Amsterdam. Not because they were marvelling at the colourful works of the modern painter, but because they wanted to grab a special promo card featuring Pikachu in the style of Vincent van Gogh's famous self-portrait. The cards sold out within minutes and now it is clear that they will remain so at the museum: Due to security concerns, the Pokémon x Van Gogh collaboration will not be reissued.

What happened?

What happened? Actually, it was supposed to be a nice action: The Van Gogh Museum, in collaboration with the Pokémon Company, released the card "Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat". A homage to a self-portrait by Van Gogh, only with Pikachu. Everyone who bought an item in the museum shop was to receive one of these cards.

In addition, some Pokémon paintings were on display in the museum. Alleged fans, however, took advantage of the situation and stormed the Van Gogh Museum for the promo card at the end of September. So-called scalpers secured large quantities of the coveted card in order to sell them later on the internet at prices of over 500 euros. The campaign ended in utter chaos.

No more promo cards

No more Van Gogh Pikachu cards: the disaster now has consequences. The Van Gogh Museum has now announced that it will not be issuing any more promo cards. The reason for this is simple: they have acute security concerns if another action were to take place. The official statement of the museum reads as follows:
