PlayStation to end physical disc production for new games in 2028
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end in January 2028, as the company continues its transition toward digital distribution.
Beginning in January 2028
Beginning in January 2028, all new PlayStation titles will be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers. Games released before the cutoff date, including titles already planned for physical release, will not be affected and will continue to be available on disc.
According to PlayStation, the decision reflects changing consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry’s ongoing shift from physical media to digital formats. The company noted that players will continue to have multiple ways to purchase digital games, including directly through the PlayStation Store and via digital download codes sold at retail.
Will existing physical PlayStation games remain supported
Sony also confirmed that existing physical PlayStation games will remain fully supported, with players continuing to be able to install and play disc-based titles on compatible hardware.
The announcement marks a significant milestone in PlayStation’s evolution toward a fully digital software distribution model while maintaining support for previously released physical games.
