Pokémon GO developer Niantic lays off 230 employees

As part of a major restructuring that includes a shift in focus to AR technology development, Niantic is closing its LA studio, ceasing production on two games:

Marvel: World of Heroes and NBA All-World and cutting jobs from more than 200 employees. In an e-mail to employees, which was also published on the company's website,

CEO John Hanke explained the move with expenses that would no longer be sustainable. During the pandemic, the company saw a sharp increase in revenue from Pokémon Go.

The company hired employees and invested heavily in the development of new games and its AR technology.

According to John Hanke, this spending could no longer be sustained after the pandemic, as Niantic's new games did not generate enough return and revenues declined.

On the one hand, the company will invest in the development of its own games. On the other hand, in AR glasses, mixed reality devices and the expansion of the AR platform,

with the help of which developers can create better experiences for headsets and mobile games.
