Sambro develops environmentally friendly packaging design
By changing the packaging of one of its best-selling products, Sambro can save 12.8 tons of plastic annually. As part of its ESG commitments, Sambro undertook an audit of the packaging for its toy range and identified opportunities for sustainable optimization measures. The result is a fully recyclable packaging concept that replaces the "egg-shaped" plastic packaging previously used for a range of Sambro products.
Less waste more fun
This includes Sambro's best-selling "Create Your Own Character" series, which was designed in collaboration with long-term partner Hasbro as part of the Peppa Pig product line. Working together, Sambro's design, product and ESG teams developed enhanced packaging to reduce plastic waste and add an additional game element that increases retailer and consumer appeal. The result is a paper-based packaging design that is fully recyclable, including the packaging bag that contains the filling for the toy. A cut-out heart motif also provides an additional play element.
“Sambro is committed to working with its licensors such as Hasbro to develop more sustainable packaging solutions,” commented Lisa Longley, ethical and sustainability manager at Sambro. “As part of our wider ESG commitments, we have a road map which addresses how we can better use 100% recycled and recyclable materials in our packaging (…).“
In line with the current agreement with Hasbro, the new packaging will be launched in UK and EMEA retailers from January 2024 and is expected to be on shelves from SS24. Based on recent sales statistics showing that 236,363 "Create Your Own Character" toys were sold in 2022, Sambro's cardboard packaging will be able to save 12.8 tons of plastic as a direct replacement.
