Slime enters the National Toy Hall of Fame

Slime- a success story- now it enters the National Toy Hall of Fame. Slime was introduced by Mattel in 1976 as a neon-colored, jiggly substance sold in small plastic trash cans, though it had predecessors such as Wham-O’s “Super Stuff” from 1966, a moldable material with similar properties. While Super Stuff was popular, Mattel’s Slime became a major commercial success and inspired numerous imitators. In the following years, Slime became an integral component of various well-known toy lines, including Kenner’s Ghostbusters (Ecto-plazm) and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Retromutagen Ooze). The 1980s saw a peak in “gross-out” toys, many of which incorporated Slime.

Picking up on the trend

Other brands also picked up on the trend, including Galoob and Acamas, as well as Nickelodeon with products like Gak, which gained additional visibility through TV shows. In more recent years, slime has evolved through social media and DIY culture: modern versions are often colorful, scented, available in different textures, and used as sensory play materials. Brands such as OG Slimes and products like MGA Entertainment’s Poopsie sets illustrate this new variety.

Its continued popularity and decades of innovation have led to Slime being inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2025.
