SPIEL Essen 2026 set to break multiple records
SPIEL Essen, the world’s largest public board game fair, is set to open on October 22 with a number of new records expected at this year’s event.
From October 22 to 25, the fair will occupy all eight exhibition halls at Messe Essen for the first time in its history. The addition of Hall 8 brings the total exhibition space to 81,200 square meters, setting a new record for the event.
Up to 230,000 visitors are expected
Up to 230,000 visitors are expected to attend SPIEL Essen 2026, potentially making this the fair’s largest edition to date. A total of 921 exhibitors from 53 countries will present their latest games, with more than 1,500 new titles expected to be showcased. Several countries that were not represented at last year’s event, including Argentina, Iceland, Kuwait, and Slovakia, will return this year.
The fair will also introduce several new features. In cooperation with Games Workshop, SPIEL Essen will host a large laser tag arena based on the Warhammer 40,000 universe, allowing teams of up to 24 players to compete between gaming sessions.
Expanding its role
SPIEL Essen is also expanding its role as a meeting point for the international gaming industry. A new business‑to‑business matchmaking tool has been added to the official app to help retailers, publishers, designers, and other industry professionals connect more efficiently.
The event will also extend beyond the exhibition grounds through the “Essen spielt!” campaign. The initiative will include game nights at selected locations across the city, discounts for ticket holders and special offers at participating restaurants.
Several major awards will be presented
Several major awards will be presented during the fair. The German Games Prize will once again recognize the most popular games chosen by the German-speaking board game community. The newly established TCG Awards, described as the first global industry awards for trading card games, will celebrate their premiere at SPIEL Essen. The European edition of Games Workshop’s Golden Demon miniature painting competition will also return, featuring more than 1,000 entries across 14 categories.
Diverse program
A program of talks and presentations will take place on the main stage in Hall 4 throughout the four-day event. Educators Day, focusing on the role of games in schools, research and education, will be held on Friday.
American artist and illustrator Peter Mohrbacher, known for his work on Magic: The Gathering and Angelarium, will serve as the official ambassador of SPIEL Essen 2026.
The fair will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Thursday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Ticket sales began at the end of July, with around half of the available tickets for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday already sold at the time of the announcement.
SPIEL Essen has been held for more than 40 years and brings together gaming enthusiasts and exhibitors from around the world, offering visitors the opportunity to discover, test, and purchase thousands of new board games directly from exhibitors.
