TIE petition against low-cost online shopping platforms
Toy Industries of Europe (TIE) and European toy associations, including the DVSI (Deutscher Verband der Spielwarenindustrie e.V.), have launched a petition against the sale of unsafe, illegal toys on online platforms in third countries. All companies that are concerned about unfair competition can now take part at stopillegaltoys.eu/petition.
Not meeting EU safety standards
In test purchases carried out at the end of last year by Toy Industries of Europe (TIE) and national toy associations, 80 per cent of toys purchased on online platforms operating outside the EU did not meet EU safety standards. The DVSI believes that unfair competition must come to an end in order to prevent damage to reputable manufacturers. The petition that has now been launched, which is open to toy manufacturers, retailers and associations, will soon be available in several languages and will run until the end of February. The collection of signatures has already begun at the Nuremberg Toy Fair. TIE and the affiliated national associations will use this petition to call on governments and the EU to close loopholes in the law. Brussels must also ensure that online platforms are held accountable if they enable the sale of unsafe toys for which no one in the EU takes responsibility.
