TikTok fined for violating children's privacy in the EU
The European Data Protection Board has published that the Chinese video-sharing platform will be fined for processing children's data. Based on this decision, the social media platform will have to pay a fine of £12.7 million in the UK for illegal data processing of 1.4 million children under the age of 13.
The basis of the EU decision is an investigation by the Irish Data Protection Commissioner, launched in 2021, into TikTok's compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation and how the company handles the data of children aged 13 to 17. Tiktok had appealed an earlier decision in Ireland, where the company's European headquarters are located, and the regulator had issued a dispute resolution decision.
TikTok has newly announced a range of new features for European users aimed at better complying with new EU content rules that will apply on August 25.
