Tonies report black numbers in the first half of 2023
The digital audio platform Tonies ("Toniebox") has published its results for the first half of 2023. The message:
Tonies became profitable on an adjusted EBITDA basis in the first half of 2023 and delivered strong revenue growth.
Consolidated sales increased by 34.1 percent to EUR 113.1 million in the first half of 2023 (H1 2022: EUR 84.4 million).
After a strong start to the year with sales growth of 42 percent in the first quarter of 2023, which was also made possible by an
early Easter, sales in the seasonally weaker second quarter rose by 24.7 percent to EUR 48 million.
"On an adjusted EBITDA basis, we closed the first half of 2023 with a positive margin of +2.6 percent. At the same time, we recorded sales growth of 34 percent,”
says co-CEO and co-founder Marcus Stahl. This corresponds to around 3 million euros.
In the first half of 2023, all regions showed a positive growth profile, led once again by the US market, as reported by Tonies.
Sales here reached EUR 33.8 million, which corresponds to growth of 170.7 percent (Q2: +125.6 percent to EUR 14.8 million).
This progress was supported by all sales channels and product categories. While the digital channels continued to grow, the revenue growth in the retail channel was even stronger, they say.
Here, the ongoing and expanded cooperation with large retailers such as Target or Kohl's led to a sharp increase in the total number of points of sale
from around 4,200 at the end of 2022 to around 4,600 at the end of the first half of 2023.
Due to Tonies' continuous international expansion, the share of sales outside the DACH region rose significantly to 41 percent in the first six months of 2023 (H1 2022: 25 percent).
