UK Government and Comcast confirm Universal United Kingdom Resort investment

The UK Government and Comcast NBCUniversal have announced a major agreement to develop the Universal United Kingdom Resort in Bedfordshire, marking one of the largest investments ever made in the UK tourism sector.

Five-year construction period

According to the announcement, Comcast NBCUniversal will invest more than £5 billion during the resort’s expected five-year construction period, followed by an additional £1 billion in capital investment during its first decade of operation. The resort is scheduled to open in 2031 and will be Universal’s first major theme park and resort destination in both the UK and Europe.

Support the project with £1.3 billion in funding

The UK Government will support the project with £1.3 billion in funding for regional and local infrastructure improvements, including transport upgrades designed to improve access for residents and visitors. The investment is intended to help maximize the wider economic benefits of the development across the region.

Create approximately 28,000 jobs

The project is expected to create approximately 28,000 jobs, including nearly 20,000 construction roles and around 8,000 permanent positions once the resort begins operations. Government and company estimates suggest the development could generate almost £50 billion in economic benefits for the UK by 2055.

The resort will feature a world-class theme park and resort complex developed by Universal Destinations & Experiences. Universal expects the destination to attract millions of visitors annually, including more than one million international tourists each year.

More than 100 people currently employed

Construction preparations are already underway, with more than 100 people currently employed on the project in the UK. Universal reported receiving expressions of interest from more than 33,000 potential applicants, with around 80% of future employees expected to come from Bedfordshire and surrounding areas.

To mark the milestone, Chancellor Rachel Reeves, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, Comcast Chairman Brian Roberts, and Universal Destinations & Experiences Chairman and CEO Mark Woodbury officially unveiled the name and logo of the new Universal United Kingdom Resort.
