World Book Day: Inspiring love for reading

Every year, millions of children across the United Kingdom and Ireland celebrate World Book Day, a nationwide event designed to make reading fun, accessible, and exciting. Organised by the charity World Book Day, the initiative aims to ensure that every child has the opportunity to discover the joy of books.

Colourful celebrations of storytelling

Held annually on the first Thursday in March, the event transforms classrooms into colourful celebrations of storytelling. Children arrive at school dressed as their favourite literary characters, take part in reading challenges, meet authors, and join creative activities that bring stories to life. At the heart of the celebration is a practical mission: every child receives a £1/€1.50 book token, which can be exchanged for a specially selected title or used towards another book of their choice. The goal is simple but powerful — to help children own books and develop a lasting love of reading.

Reading for pleasure

The charity behind the event stresses that reading for pleasure is closely linked to wellbeing, confidence, and academic success. Yet not enough children say they enjoy reading in their free time. By working with publishers, schools, libraries, and booksellers, World Book Day provides resources and support throughout the year to encourage families to make reading part of everyday life.

UNESCO’s World Book and Copyright Day

While the March celebration is unique to the UK and Ireland, books are honoured worldwide on 23 April during UNESCO’s World Book and Copyright Day. This global event highlights the importance of books, authors, and copyright, and is marked by literary festivals, book fairs, and reading campaigns across the world.

Though the dates differ, the message is the same: books matter. Whether through costumes in a primary school classroom or international cultural events, World Book Day serves as a reminder that stories have the power to educate, inspire, and connect people of all ages.
