Mattel expands Barbie Publishing with first original YA novel
Mattel has announced Barbie: Dreamscape, the first original young adult novel based on Barbie, written by #1 New York Times bestselling author Alex Aster and published by Mattel Press. The fantasy coming-of-age novel will be released worldwide this summer, with publication dates varying by territory.
The story follows a teenage Barbie
Set in the magical world of Heartland, the story follows a teenage Barbie attending Swancrest Academy, where students are assigned their destinies upon graduation. When Barbie is unexpectedly declared "Fateless," she embarks on a journey across magical lands to find the mysterious beings who control fate. Along the way, she uncovers secrets about her world while challenging expectations and discovering her own path. The novel is aimed at readers aged 12 and up.
First original young adult novel
Barbie: Dreamscape marks the first original young adult Barbie novel and is part of Mattel’s broader publishing strategy to expand its brands through original storytelling. The book is published under Mattel Press and is available in multiple editions, including special retailer-exclusive versions in selected markets.
